Entries to this category must be a complete outfit and be created from materials that have been previously used for another purpose.

When submitting to this category, please include a few lines about what the material was used for in its other life, before you turned it into a piece of wearable art. As it is likely that you are working with non-traditional materials for this category, please ensure that the materials are well washed and free of any residue that might cause irritation to a model’s skin. If your material of choice is abrasive or scratchy, we would strongly suggest creating some sort of undergarment to be worn with your piece. Most importantly, have fun with this category! Anything is a potential material for wearable art; the hardest part is always picking which idea to work with!

Let them Drink Tea

2007 Category Winner

Used tea bags, coffee filters, various organza pieces and thrift store china

Everyday hundreds of tea bags and coffee filters are thrown away. Although they may not be the most harmful waste, they certainly are plentiful. Before they were used up, tried up and thrown away they were our various caffeine vices. This is the tea bag's and the coffee filter's chance to shine one more time in the form of a garment that could have once belonged to a fashion icon.

2007 Runner Up

Recylced vegetable steamers, metal fruit baskets, belts, costume jewellery, ornaments, buttons, knitting needles.

This Cuban inspired Cabaret costume is made from society's metal cast offs. Like the artists' work I observed on a recent trip to Havana, I have always made art from limited resources, giving new life to old objects.
