Through the Olympic Category we are asking artists to explore the Olympics
as an international event, sports in general, or ancient sport. Artists may
also explore the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympics through their entry.
This is a conceptual category: entries to the Olympic Category can be made from
any type of medium and can be a complete outfit, headdress, or brassiere to
name a few.

When you slice an apple transversely you discover a five pointed star
which is the origin of the pentagram. (Graves, R. The White Goddess, 1948).
The upright pentagram or pentacle is a popular symbol from the science
of alchemy that has long been believed to be a potent protection against
evil. The pentagram is a symbol that shields the wearer and the home.

Nylon webbing, loonies, dimes, pennies, satin ribbon, bra insert,
grommets
My ‘Olympic Support’ bra was inspired by a myriad of Olympic
symbols: the coins, the rings, the medals, the flag colours and the flame.
Canadian coins create a ‘support bra’ for female Olympians.
I modified the ‘yo yo quilting technique’ to encapsulate the
coins in stretch fabric resembling athletic wear. I used a purchased bra
for the cup size and reconstructed it using nylon webbing. The pyramid
shape of the front and back of the bra represents the hierarchy of Olympic
achievement while the red and gold colours symbolize the Olympic flame.
The gold, silver, and bronze grommets represent the Olympic medals and
the ribbons represent the joy of competition between nations. |
