For the purposes of this category a mantel is defined as a cloak or kimono fashioned from a piece of fabric wrapped loosely around the body; the inclusion of a hood is optional. We are asking artists to use this medium to tell a story: decorate your mantel to represent a theme or concept. The story being told need not relate to the Olympics (but it can if you wish). The more detail the better; without a performance in 2010 more emphasis will be on craftsmanship. This is a medium-based category: we are asking all artists to use a mantel as a base for storytelling.

In this button blanket - complete with leggings and a mask - I have created a new mythology; one where Txa'msen (raven), known to the First Nations People as both a trickster and creator, steals back the pride of the Tsimshian People.

I am drawing a parallel between the cocoon, where a butterfly is created, to the mantel or cloak of ignorance, power, greed and intolerance of mankind today. As a butterfly emerges from its previous existence, to become a great beauty and benefit to the world; I am offering hope to all of us, that we too will become the beauty and benefactors of our planet. I see us growing inside our mantel now, but the cocoon is cracking and we will emerge as new beings.
