Entry Information

To participate in the 2010 Wearable Art Exhibition, the artist’s application package must be received by the Port Moody Arts Centre no later than 5 pm on December 18, 2009. This application package contains:

An initial panel of jurors will review the application packages received and select those entries that will be part of the Wearable Art Exhibition. Artists whose entries are chosen will be notified by December 21, 2009 through email and will then be required to deliver the following to the Port Moody Arts Centre from January 4, 2010 through January 17, 2010:

  • Clearly labeled entries (actual garments);
  • Completed and signed entry contracts;
  • Appraisals (if applicable) and;
  • Shipping related requirements (if applicable):
    • Pre-paid return shipping; and
    • Return shipping labels.

The selected entries will be evaluated by a second panel of jurors and have the opportunity to win both category prizes and the People’s Choice Award.

Packaging used to deliver this material should be permanently labeled to include the artist's name and entry titles.

Further details—including a must-read FAQ document and copies of the various forms—are located on our web site at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.

About CDs

Due to the high cost of shipping most works of Wearable Art, the Port Moody Arts Centre uses CDs for the first round of judging for the Wearable Art Awards. Only if your entry has been accepted will you be required to ship your final garment.

CDs will be viewed on a PC with basic image viewing software. It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that all required information is contained on the CD.

If you do not have access to a digital camera and/or CD burner, many electronic and drug stores have scanning and CD burning services.

Guidelines

The 2010 Wearable Art Exhibition will be a two month long display coinciding with the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympic Games in British Columbia. With no performance component for this year, the 2010 jury will be basing decisions on craftsmanship, concept, and design. Finer details will be of greater importance in 2010. However, we still do require that entries are wearable.

As always, we are looking for more than a “pretty dress.” We are asking you to go deep into your imagination to create a wearable piece of art that challenges what most consider to be everyday fashion.

Important Notes

  • All entries must be wearable (but do not need to be practical in any way—in fact, the wilder the better!).
  • All accepted entries will be included in a static two month exhibition in and around the City of Port Moody during the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympic Games in British Columbia. There will not be a performance in 2010.
  • The 2010 exhibition will also feature retrospective entries from previous wearable art awards. We invite artists to contribute past entries for display free of charge.
  • Prize money will be allocated to each of the three categories and the People’s Choice Award.
  • Only new entries will be eligible for category prize money. All submissions (new and retrospective) are eligible for the People’s Choice Award.
  • International media and visitors from around the world in the Vancouver area for the Olympics will be invited to see the exhibition.
  • New entries must not have been previously exhibited in the Tri-Cities area.
  • Artists should familiarize themselves with the contract included on this page. Artists will be required to sign this contract for each of their selected entries.
  • Artists are responsible for all shipping costs—including return shipping—in addition to shipping insurance. Shipping information can be found online at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.
  • Our team is available to answer questions and can be reached at info@wearableartawards.com. More detailed information and related resources can be found on our web site at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.

Jurying

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • All entries must be wearable (but not necessarily practical);
  • Creativity and originality (not streetwear);
  • Design and the use of multiple techniques;
  • Presentation and skill with media;
  • Concept/Message; and
  • Innovative materials or innovative use of traditional materials (thinking outside of the box).

Categories

The categories for the 2010 Wearable Art Exhibition are:

  • Olympic
  • Canadian Spirit
  • Mantel

Category details can be found on our web site at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.

The art work information sheet as part of the application package must indicate the category an entry is being submitted under. An entry may only be considered for one category. Please contact us if you are unsure which category your work is best suited for.

The Port Moody Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel categories at any point during the judging process.

The Port Moody Arts Centre reserves the right to move entries between categories if it is felt the entry is better suited to a category other than that for which it was originally submitted.

Sample Contract

I the undersigned, agree not to hold the Port Moody Arts Centre Society (“PMACS”) or any of the members, staff or volunteers liable for any loss or damage to my property, sustained by reason of accident or incident occurring in or about their premises and I waive any claim I may have with respect to any loss or damage to my works submitted under this application. PMACS retains the right to photograph my entry and use any photographs submitted or taken of my work for publishing and promotions related to the Wearable Art Exhibition and subsequent Wearable Art Awards events. I agree to be responsible for the cost of packaging, shipping and return shipping for my work and insurance while in transit.

To be covered against theft and vandalism, artists must declare the value of their entry with the entry contract. Entries valued at over $1,000 must be accompanied by an appraisal.  It is understood that an entry with a declared value over $1,000 that is not accompanied by an appraisal will be insured only up to $1,000.  If the total value of damaged or stolen art works in the Port Moody Art Centre’s care exceeds $40,000, insurance coverage will be based on the percentage of individual declared values relative to all art works.  Entries either in transit or not retrieved by the pickup time are not insured.

I confirm that my entry is an original concept designed and created by me.
