Entry Information

To participate in the 2009 Wearable Art Awards, the artist’s application package must be received by the Port Moody Arts Centre no later than 5 pm on March 6, 2009. This application package contains:

  • Completed entry form;
  • Completed entry summary sheet – stating the entry’s title, materials/media used, garment size, and a 150 word statement – for each entry to be entered into the competition;
  • Entry fee of $30 for each entry to be entered into the competition; and
  • CD containing photos of each entry to be entered into the competition.

Our panel of judges will review the application packages received and select those entries that will be part of the Wearable Art performances and exhibition. Artists whose entries are chosen will be notified by March 9, 2009 through email and will then be required to deliver the following to the Port Moody Arts Centre from March 30, 2009 through April 5, 2009:

Packaging used to deliver this material should be permanently labeled to include the artist's name and entry titles.

Further details—including a must-read FAQ document and copies of the various forms—are located on our web site at www.wearableartawards.com/artists.

About CDs

Due to the high cost of shipping most works of Wearable Art, the Port Moody Arts Centre uses CDs for the first round of judging for the Wearable Art Awards. Only if your entry has been accepted will you be required to ship your final garment.

CDs will be viewed on a PC with basic image viewing software. It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that all required information is contained on the CD.

If you do not have access to a digital camera and/or CD burner, many electronic and drug stores have scanning and CD burning services.

Guidelines

The Wearable Art Awards is not a fashion show, it is a multi-media performance where the human body becomes a living, breathing, moving canvas. We are looking for more than a “pretty dress.” We are asking you to go deep into your imagination to create a wearable piece of art that challenges what most consider to be wearable, or everyday fashion.

The Wearable Art Awards is committed to challenging artists of all mediums to push their imaginations to create evocative, imaginative and thought provoking sculpture for the human body.

Important Notes

  • All entries must be wearable (but do not need to be practical in any way—in fact, the wilder the better!). However, please keep in mind that the entries will be presented on a red carpet and need to withstand being taken on and off for multiple photo shoots and fittings.
  • All accepted entries will be included in the awards performance as well as a static six week long exhibition held at the Port Moody Arts Centre.
  • Work must not have been previously exhibited in the Tri-Cities area.
  • Artists should familiarize themselves with the contract included in this pamphlet. Artists will be required to sign this contract for each of their selected entries.
  • Artists are responsible for all shipping costs—including return shipping—in addition to shipping insurance.
  • More detailed information and related resources can be found on our website at www.wearableartawards.com/artists. Our team is available to answer questions and can be reached at info@wearableartawards.com.

Jurying

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • All entries must be wearable (but not necessarily practical);
  • Creativity and originality (not streetwear);
  • Design and the use of multiple techniques;
  • Presentation and skill with media;
  • Concept/Message; and
  • Innovative materials or innovative use of traditional materials (thinking outside of the box).

Categories

The categories for the 2009 Wearable Art Awards are:

Brassiere Fantasque
Olympic†
Headdresses
Open
Recycled Materials

The entry summary sheet as part of an application package must indicate the category an entry is being submitted under. An entry may only be considered for one category. Please contact us if you are unsure which category your work is best suited for.

The Port Moody Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel categories at any point during the judging process.

The Port Moody Arts Centre reserves the right to move entries between categories if it is felt the entry is better suited to a category other than that for which it was originally submitted.

† Entries must be a full outfit to be considered for this category. To be considered a full outfit, the submission should cover a model’s top and bottom.
